Tutorial: Chester's Hair

Important note: When following this tutorial or any other, make sure to draw VERY LIGHTLY. The images shown here have been drawn too dark so that they can be seen easier; your actual sketches should be done MUCH lighter than this so that mistakes and unneeded lines can be erased.

STEP #1:
First you start out with a basic FOP head shape.

STEP #2:
About 2/5 away from the "ear side" of the head, draw a small curl or "U"-shape.

STEP #3:
Draw two parallel lines extending from the bend and the lower point of the "U" shape. These should be about equal in length, and half again as long as the "U" shape.

STEP #4:
Connect the open ends of the parallel lines; try to make the curve connecting the open ends match the ear-side curve of the "U" shape as closely as you can. Erase the unneeded lines in the middle.

STEP #5:
Draw a line about as long as the "U"-shape is tall extending from the non-ear-side cheek. It should line up with the ear on the other side.

STEP #6:
Make one smooth swoosh with your pencil, connecting the end of the line with the spot where the U-shape touches the top of his head. Along the side of the face the distance from his cheek should stay fairly even, but when you reach the area over his head it should expand to about half again as far away from the face before diving in and connecting to the top of his head.

Finishing touches: Once your satisfied, finish it off by adding hair-lines (One on the long side, two on the short side) and darken your lines.
